The Plaza has its Eloise and the Stanley of The Shining fame its haunted room 418, but at the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern, every key has a story. Crowned heads, rock stars, political heavyweights, literary geniuses, and classical composers are among the greats who have populated its 101 rooms over its 175-year history. —The Daily Meal, Sept 5, 2015
Greta Garbo made the point in 1932 in the movie “The Grand Hotel.” And so did the 19th century composer Franz Liszt who declared that “the story of two happy lovers” should be set there. Lake Como is the ideal setting for a fairy tale wedding, a honeymoon, an anniversary celebration, possibly even a proposal.
Lake Como, ringed by stately Italian villas the color of faded terra cotta and burnt ochre, is touted as a playground of the rich and famous. Prague is a picturesque city beloved by photographers—and by Condé Nast Traveler readers, who voted it their sixth favorite city in the world last year. And while much of Prague’s art and architecture is several centuries old, its attitude is decidedly progressive, particularly when it comes to LGBT rights. South Lake Tahoe is a city with two faces. Technically, it’s a California leisure destination with stunning natural scenery and year-round outdoor recreation, but it also shares a border with Stateline, Nevada, home to casinos and nightclubs, qualifying as distinctly indoor recreation. The good news is that a long weekend here brings the best of both worlds, making a mini-holiday feel ample. Even better, Tahoe is now an easy-access playground for East Coast travelers, thanks to JetBlue’s new nonstop flights between New York’s JFK and Reno-Tahoe International Airport.—Fodors.com
